Summer Reading Week 2023

Newsletter #16

Summer Reading Week 2023

August 2023

Remember me?

I’m the fool who said he could write a 200,000-word novel in his spare time.

You haven’t heard from me in a while. Truth to tell, the first half of this year has seen a lot of pondering / thinking / researching / panicking, but not a great deal of writing. Self-doubt, some tricky chapters, and an almighty dollop of laziness have taken their toll.

But all that will change. Just you wait and see.

In the meantime, here’s something to get your literary teeth into this week. Starting on Monday morning, I’ll be serialising another chapter from The Descent of Chloe Jackson. This one’s called Yoredale, and you’ll get about a thousand words delivered by email every morning in time for breakfast.

The story’s a tricky moment in the life of George Calvert, another of Chloe’s great great grandparents, and I’m hoping you’ll root for him, despite his significant personality defects!

If you’re squeamish, perhaps you should read it after breakfast.

As always, if you’ve enjoyed this Newsletter, and if you have like-minded, book-reading, story-loving friends who might enjoy it too, please do pass it on to them. They sound like just the kind of person I’d love to share this journey with.

Let’s sign them up at subscribepage.io/paulcmercer.

And, if you’re reading this old newsletter on the website, George’s story can be found here.

All the best
